Time to try translating a few modern classics. Sure is easier than translating xalq mahnısı! However, I rarely get things completely right the first time, so please advise! Thanks for the help with "baş acıq" - I'm translating it as carefree.

Let's look up azerdict.com which has explanatory dictionary of Azerbaijani language. By the way very useful and shows also other variations.
It says:
Başı açıq qalmaq məc. – himayəsiz, yiyəsiz, kimsəsiz qalmaq. Başı açılmaq – 1) bax başı ayılmaq 1-ci mənada. İşdən heç başım açılmır; 2) külli miqdarda axın ilə gəlməyə başlamaq. Sürünün başı açıldı. – Bir neçə dəqiqədən sonra dəstənin başı açıldı. M.S.Ordubadi;
In your sentences it means "himayəsiz, yiyəsiz, kimsəsiz qalmaq/olmaq" in english unprotected, living without anybody's help, without anybody's care etc.
Baş in Azerbaijani also have different meaning such as ailə başçısı - lider of family who cares about family, who protects family, who responsible for family.
I forget something, "without head" are more appropriate.
