Postpositions (like English prepositions)

You really can't create anything beyond the most basic of sentences without making use of postpositions. They are called postpositions because they are placed after the word they modify. They do the same job as prepositions in English (which, naturally are placed before the word they modify.) It feels strange at first, but you soon get used to the reverse order. Practice makes perfect with this one.

This posting will cover:
ilə, -lə -la, -nən -nan, qədər, sonra, üçün, görə, əvvəl, qabaq, haqqında, başqa, kimi.

ilə - with / by
This can mean with someone or something, or the means of doing something.

Mən yoldaşım ilə filormoniyaya getmişəm. I went to the Philharmonic with my husband.
Biz filormoniyaya taksi ilə getmişdik. We went by taxi to the Philharmonic.

Note that a few pronouns use the possessive form with ilə. This is true of some other postpositions as well.

Mənim ilə - with me
Sənin ilə - with you
Onun ilə - with him, her, or it
Bizim ilə - with us
Sizin ilə - with you
(Note that Onlar does not take the possessive case)

Bunun ilə - with this
Onun ilə - with that

Kimin ilə - with whom

O mənim ilə konsertə getdi. He went to the concert with me.

-lə, -la - with + -nən, -nan - with
These suffixes can be used to express the same meaning as ilə. However, if the word they are modifying ends with a vowel, it is not used, ilə is used instead. The -nən -nan form is a bit more informal, though very commonly heard.

Mən rəfiqəmlə danışdım. I spoke with my girlfriend.
Mən dostumnan danışdım. I spoke with my friend.

qədər - until

Gələn həftəyə qədər mən pulu üçün gözləyərəm. I will wait for the money until next week.
70% qədər endirim var. Up to 70% off (sale).

sonra - after
Like əvvəl and qabaq, sonra takes the -dən -dan case.

İşdən sonra biz restorana gedəcək. We will go to a restaurant after work.
Mən üç gündən sonra Londona gedirəm. I am going to London in three days (three days from now).

üçün - for / in order to
Üçün uses the possessive case for mən, sən, o, biz, siz, bu, o, and kim.

Bu paltarı sənin üçün tikmişdim. I have sewn this dress for you.
Yaxşı yeri tapmaq üçün mən təz getdim. I went early in order to find a good spot.

görə - because
This postposition is usually used with the phrase Ona görə də or Buna görə.

Saat işləmirdi, ona görə də mən gec idim. The clock wasn't working so I was late.
O kobud idi. Buna görə də mən hirsləndim.  She was rude. Because of this I was angry.

əvvəl - before
This postposition uses the -dən -dan case ending on the preceding word.

Onlar iki ay bundan əvvəl Londona getdilər. They went to London 2 months ago.
O üç gün bundan əvvəl Kanadaya getdi. She went to Canada three days ago.
Biz kinodan əvvəl restorana getmişdik. We went to a restaurant before the film.
Mən imtahandan əvvəl çox oxudum. I studied a lot before the test.

qabaq - before
This postposition uses the -dən -dan case ending on the preceding word.

Onlar iki ay bundan qabaq Londona getdilər. They went to London 2 months ago.
O üç gün bundan qabaq Kanadaya getdi. She went to Canada three days ago.
Biz kinodan qabaq restorana getmişdik. We went to a restaurant before the film.
Mən imtahandan qabaq çox oxudum. I studied a lot before the test.

haqqında - about
Haqqında uses the possessive case for mən, sən, o, biz, siz, bu, o, and kim. In addition, haqqında itself changes according to the possessive case it follows.

Bizim haqqımda onlar danışdılar. They were talking about us.
Mənim haqqımda sən heç nə bilirsən. You know nothing about me.
Bunub haqqında nə bilirsən? What do you know about this?

başqa - except, besides, other than
Başqa uses the -dən -dan case on the previous word.

Səndən başqa hamı gəldi. Except for you, everyone came.
Nigardan başqa hamı goca çatdi. Other than Nigar, everyone arrived late.
Yumurtadan başqa yeməyi yaxşı idi. Except for the eggs, the food was good.
Yatmaqdan başqa o heç nə eləyə bilmir. He can't do anything besides sleep.

kimi - like
Kimi uses the possessive case for mən, sən, o, biz, siz, bu, o, and kim.

Bu alma bal kimi şirindir. This apple is as sweet as honey.
Mən onun kimi geyinmək isteyirəm. I want to dress like her.

If you allowed me I would like to mark some mistakes.

filormoniyaya

həftə qədər

üç gündən sonra

Bu paltarı sənin üçün tikmişdim. - accusative is compulsory here as we are talking about specific object; and it would be better translated as "I had sewn ..."

Yatmaqdan başqa o heç nə el bilmir.

Mən onun kimi gey(in)mək isteyirəm.

There's mistakes:
İşdən sonra biz restorana (gedəcək) *gedəcəyik.
Yaxşı yeri tapmaq üçün mən (təz) *tez getdim.
Bizim (haqqımda) haqqımızda onlar danışdılar.
Mənim haqqımda sən heç nə (bilirsən) *bilmirsən. (it's like you know something about nothing)
Bunu(b)*n haqqında nə bilirsən?.
Mən onun kimi geyinmək ist(e)*ə yirəm. (but in informal speech it sounds like: istiyirəm)
