A conversation about the weather (Hava haqqında)

This is my first attempt to put podcasts on the blog. Thanks to my colleague Said for his technical assistance. My library colleague Lala kindly agreed to have a conversation about weather with me. (I am obviously the foreigner; she is obviously the native speaker!) I hope you enjoy this short audio file.





A transcription of the Azerbaijani follows, with translation. [People here pronounce Colleen as Kolin not Kalin - don't know why.]


Colleen: Lalə. Salam!
Lala. Hi!

Lala: Salam, Kolin, necəsən?
Hi Colleen, how are you?
C: Yaxşıyam, bəs sən?
Fine, and you?
L: Mən də yaxşıyam, çox sağ ol!
I'm fine as well, thanks!
C: Sağ ol. Bu gün hava çox gözəldir.
Thanks. Today the weather is really beautiful.
L: Bu gün çox gozəl hava var. Bahar da havalar çox gözəl olur, Bakıda.
Today the weather is great. In spring the weather is very nice in Baku.


C: Bakıda... amma... məncə... yay-... hava-... yayın hava-... havası ən gözəldir.
In Baku... but, in my opinion, the weather in summer is the best.
L: Mən yayı çox sevirəm, amma baharıda çox sevirəm.
I like summer a lot, but I like spring too.

C: Hə.
Yeah.

L: Bilirsən niyə? Çünki baharda güllər açır, ah... guşlar oxuyur, isti ... adamın ürəyi açılır. Bahar çox gözəl olur.
Do you know why? Because in spring the flowers bloom, the birds sing, it is hot, people open up. Spring is really great.
C: Könül açılır...
Spirits lift.
L: Könüllər açılır...

C: Hə... yaxşı, yaxşı... Amma bu... ah... bu il qış çox sərt idi.
Yeah... good, good. But, this year winter was really severe.
L: Oldu.

L: Havalar çox sərt oldu. Belə qış bizdə çoxdan olmurdu. Mən balaca olanda, belə sərt qış var idi. Amma indi bu qış çox sərt oldu. Həddindən artıq çox sərt oldu.
The weather was really severe. We haven't had this kind of winter in a long time. When I was a child, we had this kind of winter. But now this winter is really inclement. It's so severe it's beyond measure.
C: Hə, hə, hə. Çünki mən Bakıda... mmm... yaşaydım... beş il.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Because I have lived in Baku for five years.

L: Beş il yaşayırsan.

C: ... yaşayıram...

L: Payızda çox havalar gözəl olur.
The weather is beautiful in autumn.
C: İstidir.

L: İstidir. Yarpaqlar ağaclardan saralıb yerə düşürlər. Çox qəşənq olur.
It's hot. Leaves turn yellow and fall from the trees. It's really pretty.
C: İndi... indi, Bakıda, çox yaşıldır.
Now... now in Baku it's really green.

L: Yaşıl. Düzdür. Mən payızı daha çox rayonlarda sevirəm.
Green. You're right. I really like autumn in the countryside.
C: Hə.
Yeah.

L: Meşələrdə...

C: Orda bir az sərindir.
It's a little fresh [cool] there.

It's beautiful. Autumn in the countryside is really lovely.

The weather is really great in autumn. If you have time, go to the countryside in autumn.

L: Sən rayonlarda olmusan? Azərbaycanda hansı rayonlara olmusan? Şəkidə olmusan?
