Trying to make sense of some new items on BBC Azeri. Where do they find these words?!

Avstarliya sakini olan həmin qadın bir evdən digərinə köçərkənsaatlarla intensiv iş görməli, şkafları yığışdırmaq üçün bəzən uzun müddət əyilərək hərəkətsiz vizyyətdə oturmalı olub.

The Avstarliya I assume is a mistake for Avstraliya. But what the heck is köçərkənsaatlarla? Not in any dictionary that I have. And vizyyətdə? Do they mean vəziyyət? 

And here's another:

Diskvalifikasiyası? What does it mean? Are they just making up these words?

I'm back from a trip to Italy. Must say, I will miss the cappuccinos! And the warm weather, and the free wifi, and the gluten-free meals (in the land of pasta!), and of course the lovely local wine.

But, the real reason for writing this post is to translate the quotation above from the famous Azerbaijani entrepreneur and philanthropist. 

Earn money, but don't lose your honor. Money comes and goes - but not honor.

Again, all advice is most welcome!

Idiomatic expression

This is a funny thing to say. Popular with older people. It literally means - We didn't die but we have seen this day! When something surprising happens that you didn't expect - good or bad - you can say this. Ölmədik, du günü də gördük!

But, how to express this in English?

I was looking at BBC Azeri again to read more about the news in Azerbaijan and discovered an interesting "blog" item from a writer named Nərmin Kamal. It is an interesting article about the language as it is used today. Let's try to translate...

Narmin Kamal's blog: Arrrgghhh! OK, now even the title is troublesome. It seems the exact translation of the title would be Azerbaijan's language's pride. Now, that just doesn't work in English. So I have settled on: The grandeur of the Azerbaijani language. 

The article covers two main topics: 

Azərbaycan dilinin öz üstünlükləri və kəsiri, qüruru və qorxuları var.

"The Azerbaijani language has advantages and disadvantages, greatness and weaknesses."

So, what are the advantages? She seems to be saying that the advantage is that Azerbaijani is like a secret language that others don't understand - that is, workers can insult their boss with impunity because he doesn't understand what they are saying to him. (Did I understand this correctly? I assume he speaks English?) I must say I don't really get this. Things darken considerably when I try to translate “Ə düdük, bizdən yaxşı bilirsən?” Hey stupid [?], you know better than us? Well, check out what Dilmanc does with düdük. Can this really be? 

What are the disadvantages? Same as the advantage - other people don't speak it.

The weaknesses? Education in the mother tongue.

Greatness? That works of great literature exist and are still being written and published in Azerbaijani, despite racist comments from other cultures!

In this last section there is another sentence that is impossible for me to translate. 

"Yüz milyonlarla azərbaycanlı üçün Azərbaycan dili ev pijaması funksiyası yerinə yetirir."

What does this mean?? That millions of Azerbaijanis only speak Azerbaijani at home?

Someone help! Sometimes I despair of ever learning this language...

It's New Year's Eve. Yeni İliniz Mübarək!

I'd like to start off the new year with a few odd questions for my Azerbaijani readers.

Apparently it's the Year of the Horse. Some sites online say the "green" horse, some say, even more strangely, the "wooden" horse. Maybe that can account for this image.







Here are a few more images. My first question is - why are Azerbaijanis so fond of Chinese astrology? (Or maybe they aren't, that my impression is wrong.) But an Azerbaijani friend came to have Christmas dinner and said it was auspicious that we had fruit in every course - since it was the Year of the Horse (and horses eat apples). Any other lore about the Zodiac or this particular year would be welcome.

 Other questions that have come up recently...



What do Azerbaijanis say for see-saw? Several dictionaries gave the word yelləncək. But this is a general term, as I understand it, that can be applied equally to swings and related playground equipment. A friend told me that a see-saw in particular is called a yer üstü yelləncək. But another person said that this was not a word in Azerbaijani, and would that make a swing a yeraltı yelləncək? OK, now things are getting rather complicated here. To make matters worse, I contacted a friend who grew up in the rayon. He says that they called it kil-miko oyunu. Huh???



I did a search on Google Translate and it said that it is taxta üzərində yırğalanma, which looks promising to me, since it refers to rocking rather than swinging. This more properly describes a see-saw, or as we also called them when I was a kid, a teeter-totter. (The first is a British usage, the second is North American). Both English language terms refer to the rocking motion of the device. Apparently see-saw is a direct Anglicization of the French term ci-ça - this-that, which again describes the motion. The term teeter-totter is derived from a Norfolk language word tittermatorte. Both terms are examples of "reduplication", where a syllable is repeated, but with a different vowel. It is commonly used for words that describe repeated activity. I wonder if this could be applied to the Azerbaijani way of repeating the same syllable as in - gəzə-gəzə or qaça-qaça.

As one travels through the USA, the names change to tilting-board, dandle-board, ridey-horse, and hickey-horse. Which leads me to my next question - what do Azerbaijanis call a rocking horse? Google Translate says it is sallanan at. Another question for the Year of the Horse!

On a totally different note, does anyone out there know the correct Azerbaijani for the opening part of Mahur Hindi - is it Bərdaşt? Also, is the later part spelled Qərai or Qərayi?

At the Spa...

It is a good exercise to try to write up a description of your day in a conversational way. Here's one I did recently.

Keçən həftə mən kurortun üzvü oldum. Kurortda üzgüçülük hovuzu var. Həmçinin orada müxtəlif xüsusi masaj növləri var.  Masaj üçün görüş təyin etdim. Planım var idi ki, əvvəl üzərdim, və sonra masaj qəbul edərdim. Buna baxmayaraq, kurorta çatanda, anladım ki, üzgüçüluk kostyumumu unutmuşam. “Nə pis oldu!” mən dedim. Eva getmək istəmədim. Ona görə də, qəbulçudan soruşdum ki, mənim görüşümü əvvələ keçirə bilər. O, mənə dedi ki, olar. Mənim masajım isti daşlarla edildi. Çox rahat oldu. Masajdan sonra mən saunaya getdim. I get grumpy when I miss my lunch!

I am a cheerful, happy person by nature. But one thing that makes me grumpy is to miss my lunch. So, you can understand my having a sense-of-humour failure recently when my lunch went missing from the staff fridge overnight. I wrote up a quick and rather humourless note to post on the fridge but then thought - this is going to be very difficult to translate into Azerbaijani. So... I asked two friends to translate. The first friend did a translation very close to my original rant. The second friend softened the message up with a little more humour.

So, here are the two Azerbaijani versions. See which one you prefer! Can you translate them?

I have come across a new learning resource: Azərbaycan Dili I mərhələ by Mina Quliyeva. Published in 2001. Might be hard to find in bookstores, but it is available to borrow from the CCF Library. Instructions and explanations in French only. Clear explanations and nicely presented. I recommend it.

This is my attempt to come up with simple sentences for words in Chapter 1. They are part of the "Phonétique" and are only there for review of pronunciation, but I thought I would use it for vocabulary building. The list is long! All done now. I had some help to correct my mistakes.

Quotations are from dictionaries; they might have typos, so let me know.

In the news - Qızın Qaçırılması

I was pleased to find a new free newspaper in Baku - written largely in Azerbaijani. It's the "New Baku Post - pulsuz". I picked up a copy at a display in the Park Bulvar Mall. I'm assuming because it is free I can reproduce it here as another translation exercise. This article is on the topic of the abduction of young women (usually by guys who want to marry them).  Apparently there were 10 cases in the first 6 months of this year and 16 in 2011. All were committed with the goal of marriage.

It is useful after reading a story to create sentences with the new vocabulary, even with words that you already knew. Here are some sentences using vocab from Anar's short story. A few of the sentences were taken from my dictionaries. Try to translate! (Answers are now at the bottom of the post.)

It seems there is a oral tradition (şifahi xalq ədəbiyyatı) of telling riddles in Azerbaijani.You can find books of riddles in Azerbaijan that are not only fun to figure out but are great for building vocabulary. Altun Kitab press publishes a small red paperback with 639 riddles. They are listed by themes such as Bitkilər (plants), Geyim və bəzək şeyləri (clothing and jewelry), and Xörəklər və qida məhsulları (Meals and food products). Look for it in bookshops. Here are some that I have figured out (OK, for some I peeked at the answers in the back of the book). I'll list examples here and answers on the following page. Warning: some are very specific to Azerbaijani culture!

Apparently this was a top Twitter event in Russia in the last couple of days. Go figure.


However, it makes a good translation exercise. And besides, it's an excuse to put a cute cat picture on my blog!

Robbers wanted to hijack tram

Milli.Az "Agence France-Presse"ə istinadən bildirir ki, həmin şəxslər tapançanı tramvay sürücüsünə dirəyərək istiqaməti dəyişməyi və onları lazım olan yerə aparmağı istəyiblər.

Milli.Az announced that according to AFP these same people pressed a gun to the tram driver to change direction and take them to the place where they needed to be.

Sürücü təbii ki, tələbi yerinə yetirə bilməyib. O, polis çağırıb.

The driver, naturally enough, could not meet this demand. He called the police.
