Verb phrases using Əl (hand)

There are many expressions using əl. Some are quite literal but others would be impossible to guess. A friend recently helped me learn these. The entry for əl in my red dictionary covers three pages!!


Əl atmaq - start something, start a project or job

Əl çekmək - leave alone, stop doing
Əl çekməmək - don't leave something, don't stop doing
Əl eləmək - attract attention by waving hand

Əl görtürmək - leave alone, stop doing
Əl işi etmək - make by hand
Əl saxlamaq - to stop doing something
Əl uzatmaq - reach out one's hand
Əl üzmək - to be lost, unable to do something, to lose hope in achieving something (Mən əl üzürəm.)
Əl vermək - to shake hands, to be useful (O mənə əl verir. - Mənim üçün layıqdır.)
Əl vurmaq - to touch, to clap
Əl yazısı etmək - handwritten


Əldə etmək (eləmək) - to receive, to earn


Əldən buraxmaq - to release, to let go, to lose
Əldən düşmək - to be really tired
Əldən getmək - to be lost, to be so tired that you can't move
Əldən qoymaq - to release, to let go, to lose
Əldən tutmaq - to help someone

Ələ baxmaq - to be dependent on, to look to someone for a present or money
Ələ keçirmək - to tease, to laugh at

Ələ salmaq - to tease, to laugh at

Ələrini dalına qoymaq - to put one's hands behind one's back
Ələrini daraqlamaq - to put one's head in one's hands in despair

Əli boşa çıxmaq - to lose something, to not get something that one was expecting or hoping to get

Əlinə zurna vermək - to give empty promises (boş söz vermək)

Əlini ağdan-qaraya vurmaq - to be lazy (not touching anything from white to black)
